Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival of China!

2025 05/24

The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanyang Festival or the Dragon Boat Festival, is one of the important traditional festivals in China. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month every year

Origin and Legend: In memory of Qu Yuan, during the Warring States Period, Qu Yuan, a poet of the State of Chu, threw himself into the Miluo River out of concern for his country and committed suicide. When the people rowed boats to rescue him but failed, they threw zongzi to prevent fish and shrimp from eating his body. Later, this custom evolved into dragon boat racing and eating zongzi.

Main customs: Dragon boat racing: Originating from the legend of rescuing Qu Yuan, it has now developed into a competitive sport. International dragon boat races are held in many places to highlight the spirit of unity.

Eating zongzi: Wrapped with glutinous rice in bamboo leaves, the fillings are sweet (red bean paste, red dates) and salty (fresh meat, egg yolks), with different flavors in the north and south. It has become a signature delicacy of festivals.

Hanging mugwort and calamus: Hanging mugwort and calamus in front of the door takes advantage of their fragrance to repel insects and ward off evil spirits. There is a folk saying that "willows are planted during the Qingming Festival and mugwort during the Dragon Boat Festival."

The Dragon Boat Festival is not only a festival to remember the sages of the past, but also a manifestation of nature worship and health concepts in Chinese culture. Its customs have endured for thousands of years and still thrive in contemporary times, serving as a cultural bond connecting Chinese people around the world.
